Congresswomen Rebuke Trump's 'Racism' And 'Weak' Leadership | The Beat With Ari Melber | MSNBC

take a look at this visual for members of Congress for American citizens for duly elected members of the US House of Representatives each elected in the wave of 2018 which was itself largely a rebuke to president trump and trumpism you are looking at what we just saw what just happened here in Washington that is being seen around America representatives Ilhan Omar Alexandria Oh cozy ok Zia Cortez Ayanna Presley and Rashida to leave speaking out together to rebuke the president for what they call his racist race-baiting hateful and misleading claims and attacks on them and when they came to that lectern within this last hour it was the first time the four joined together to respond the recent tweets and words from the president are simply a continuation of his racist xenophobic playbook this is the agenda of white nationalists this country belongs to you and it belongs to everyone and today that notion that very notion was challenged this is a distraction and we should not take the bait this is his plan to pit us against one another that is new that is the response from one arm of your government the other arm of government in our system led by Donald Trump doubled down on xenophobia today if you hate our country if you're not happy here you can leave you're complaining all the time very simply you can leave you can leave right now you have somebody that comes from Somalia which is they failed government these are people that hate our country hey John they hate our country they hate it I think with a passion if they don't like it here they can leave don't Trump's comments today are drawing fire they're drawing condemnation they're drawing disappointment across America as racist and patently xenophobic slurs the Speaker of the House is pushing a formal resolution to condemn Donald Trump's racism and in a different time perhaps the leaders of both parties in Congress would say they're against this they stand against this at least for a day in public but today is not that day I have to report to you that the leader on the Senate side of the Republican Party Mitch McConnell refused to even comment on this when reporters caught up with him meanwhile asked today point-blank if he was not concerned that white nationalist groups find common cause with him President Trump to that question said no he's not concerned and this is where I want to dig in a little bit for a moment tonight why would he be this is all out in the open Donald Trump is invoking the language and the argument of white nationalists in America for a long time coming you know there's a classic editorial cartoon that shows Americans yelling at a Native American to quote go back where you came from but since every non-native American is an immigrant in this cartoon world of events the Native Americans responds you took the words right out of my mouth but this history goes beyond logical games and arguments and cartoons this history is very real when United States fought over segregation when troops were called in to protect black children who just were supposed to go to school in Little Rock the New York Times reported on a fifteen-year-old black teenager surrounded then this was the front of the paper that day surrounded by a reportedly quote jeering crowd and The Times reports that several troops had to use their clubs to push that crowd back to prevent anyone from molesting her quote don't let her in go back where you came from that crowd yelled when a Black Panther activists went to protest the Attica prison in 1971 to draw attention to how people are treated in prison in this country and as should we think about today she related the reception she received there quote we were threatened at gunpoint and told go back where you came from or when the famous pianist Walter Haught sig who fled the Nazis in Europe to come to our country to come here to America and then when asked he refused to perform for an Alabama promoter who he learned it turned out wanted to ban black Americans from that concert he told that promoter as bad as the Nazis and they said back to him go back where you came from go back that's what those white nationalists told a Jew who fled the Nazis and wanted to simply stand up for equality right here in America in our country that's the ugly history in the context of the sitting president telling American citizens and the opposition party to go back where they came from everyone knows what he's saying so when what he says is met with silence by literally hundreds of Republicans in Congress it raises the deeper questions that go beyond Donald Trump take this southern paper today the Charlotte Observer asking are you okay with a racist president Republicans I'm joined tonight for a discussion on this so it's a former Solicitor General United States Neil Koch ah Tiffany cross managing editor of the beat DC no relation I should mention political analyst michelle bernard and adam green co-founder of the progressive change campaign committee what is this language mean to you it's repulsive when when i when you when you you take it bit by bit one of the first things I did today after hearing the second the second presser that the president had today was I went to take a look and see what Rush Limbaugh was say because to me that gives us a really good sense of what many people on the right are seeing and feeling and one of the things he's saying is number one don't blame this on the president don't be mad at the president blame it on the media because the the left-wing media is against us you know he says Donald Trump isn't racist Donald Trump didn't mention color he didn't mention race these are anti-american anti-israel you know horrible horrible women and and and they should go back to the places where they came from and what it says to me is America was built on the backs of black men and black women who didn't want to be here and when they wanted to go back to Africa they were not allowed to do so black women were raped black men were suffered all types of atrocities we built this country there's absolutely no reason for any of us to leave it America is as much our country as it is anyone elses and the question I have for Mitch McConnell and all the Republicans who did not come out and say anything about what the president said today is is this what today's Republican Party stands for what happened to the big tent so I completely agree with you I do think though we have to acknowledge that I'll quote my friend Michael Eric Dyson here and say Frankenstein was the the doctor not the monster this is the monster that the GOP created and we have to acknowledge that this didn't begin this year this certainly isn't the first time that we have a white nationalist in the oval office of this country this isn't the first time that we've had white nationalists walking the Capitol Hill but we see right now this is what happens when we're silenced I would even go a step further and say this is the first time that the media has been so bold to say the president made racist comments oh not comments with racial undertone yeah that means that some people found racist I think had we called a thing a thing two years ago when this president kicked off his campaign by calling Mexicans rapists and drug dealers had we called the thing a thing in 2011 when he talked about the Obama being a birther had we called the thing I think decades ago when he called for the murder of the Central Park five and now exonerated five and you know in an honor of being here with Ari I'll say I'll cultivate urban philosopher nas here otherwise known as the Nasir Jones and say evidently it's elementary they want us all gone eventually these women represent millions of people when he says go back to where you came from he's not talking about these four lawmakers he's talking about you and me and you and you and all their constituents and their constituents exactly very well well put we don't have nas on this program tonight but we do have Professor Dyson later in the hour so in a appropriate reference to think on a serious topic I want to now play briefly the president's saying yes he's fine with the white nationalist agreement take a look Neil I'm a US citizen too when a man later identified as 36 year old Christopher Nelson called her an Isis expletive and said that I will cut your throat go back to you that many people saw that tweet as races and that white nationalist groups are finding common cause with you on that point doesn't concern me because many people agree with me and all I'm saying they want to leave they killing so I think that there's a political dimension historical dimension but I think the reason why you get these comments creating such resonance in the country is because of the personal dimension I think you know I don't talk personally on your show much but I think anyone who has brown skin hears these comments all the time for me it started when I was three years old when my mom was pulling out and of the car and pulling out of the driveway and someone knocked on our door and said go back to your country and you have a you have a memory of this in your life is memory of three years old and I want I want you to contrast that as you speak to the public memory because we'll put it we'll pull it and put it back up I mentioned the top of the show the Little Rock four and the New York Times reporting that what they were saying then to them what our earlier panelists mentioned you're saying they've said to you yeah not just then but my mom laughed don't I was three I remember this very vividly that was her response just utter sheer laughter but I think this is different because this is of course not some Rando on the street this is the President of the United States doing this in taking comfort like in that clip by saying well lots of people think what I'm saying that's not a defense that fundamentally disqualifies him to be the President of the United States he is such in a war with our constitutional values and our you're right this is the land of Little Rock and Selma of dr. King of Abraham Lincoln of our 14th amendment and our Declaration of Independence and this president doesn't get any part of that yeah and this is it as I mentioned because what you're talking about is what people have lived and what they hear and speak if you would kneel and and they're back to the panel as we look at this this was the history surrounded by a jury crowd go back home they said to someone who was home as you were alluding to what does it mean well then one of the responses the president gets is well maybe he didn't mean that or people are blowing it out of proportion yeah it's not a proportion I mean it's fundamentally inconsistent with what it means to be an American you can look at Ronald Reagan's one of his last speeches when he was president on November 7th at 1988 in which he says is put up on my Twitter right now which is you know you're fundamentally you can be a Frenchman and come here you're now an American but this is not what he says and you know this rhetoric it's not just when I was three sorry I get these emails every day I get calls every day saying go back Mohammed lover go back to Pakistan they don't really understand where people with brown skin Iran but you know this is something that lots of Americans experience every single day and that's why I think this is getting a resonance and the way others do and when you and I have talked about you know the you know Muller and you know obstruction of justice and conspiracy and all that's important but this is a conspiracy against our constitutional values that every day I think it's something to note that the scariest thing about the president's comments today was the applause from the audience yes the other scary thing is all the people at home were applauding the other scary thing is the deafening silence we see from a Republican Party who controls a branch of our government and a lot of the judiciary all across the country right now people are disagreeing with what you're saying re they're disagreeing with me they're still looking at us saying we're part of this left-wing media that doesn't understand the country that we built for free so I think we have to root this out stem but the size that has inside it and what I would say is what's even scarier to me than the deafening silence is every single day of the week you can go on social media and find video of someone yelling at a person of color in a restaurant or in a park and telling them to go back to the country that they came from every day young women like me fear their sons and their daughters leaving their home just to go to school just recently I just told my son in advance of something he was getting ready to do to be careful and don't play music too loud and showed him the story on the news about the man who thought a young black boy was playing his rap music too loud and slit his throat this comes from the top and it trickles down talk about took a trickle-down economics this is trickle-down murder it's very very serious he is setting the tone for a country that makes it unsafe for anyone who looks like the people sitting at this very table right and that was a point I think there was alluded to by the by these for women of color members of Congress today as well about well what are you what are you putting out into the bloodstream exactly make a death threats every day and so Adam you or someone who's worked for a long time at that intersection of what the Democratic Party is what it should be and how it should deal with its foes and five or ten years ago where your where your group was people a lot of people in this town said too far and you're too negative or cynical about the bottom Republican Party certainly that was how people viewed your group in the Obama area and here I think it's fair to say what do you see as someone who said no you have to meet fire with fire in this part of the of the way the Republican Party looks today in Washington well first before gaining that power dynamic I think it's important just acknowledge the moral moment that we're in and as the one guest here who does not have black or brown skin I think it's important to say that white people need to call out white nationalism explicitly white people need to call out racism at this moment explicitly and that's the bare minimum we can do you know there was a direct correlation here between this racist policy and what's happening at the borders with these children right it's not just about comments that are being said and criticized you know I have not seen any images of white people in those cages right this this is an outgrowth of it the inhumanity expressed by pom a by Trump through his policies there's having huge ramifications on people's lives so that gets directly to these young women of color who are progressives and pushing the envelope and what they're doing and frankly they are a threat they are a threat to the entire power establishment not just the Republican Party but the Democratic Party and this has been a weird week where it's been first it was a democratic civil war and now Trump is getting in and about wide recuiting are gonna get mixed up but I think what we're learning here is that we have to fight fire with fire you know if you think about it this this week is a rare instance in the trump presidency where he felt so left out of the center of gravity of a debate happening that he made he felt the need to jump in right that is testament to the power that AOC and Rasheeda and Ohana and I have in moving the National Dialogue it's a good power and the Democratic Party needs to lift up that power or not try to tear it down let me play briefly for you says you mentioned them in the centrality they're a Lindsey Graham who used to say the president was a race-baiting kook quote-unquote his words and now defends almost anything take a listen we all know that AOC in this crowd are a bunch of Communists they hate Israel they hate our own country they're anti America don't get down aim higher we don't need to know anything about them personally talk about their policies earlier anti-semitic they stand for all the things that most Americans disagree with so he's trying to say actually they are the source of the hate as I mentioned and we like to do receipts around here this was Lindsey Graham back in the day on Donald Trump take a look he's a race-baiting xenophobic religious bigot he doesn't represent my party he doesn't represent the values that the men and women who wear the uniform are fighting for what do you do with that well I saw my friend Adam gentle saying a former Harry Reid staffer today call out Steve Baynes a Montana Republican senator for making the same comment he pretty much said don't bring Jews into this don't try to whitewash this racism today by invoking Jews out of nowhere you know Lindsey Graham would have a lot more credibility to say anything if the first words out of his mouth were this is white nationalism this is racism this is wrong I condemn it he's not saying that he's deflecting and the fact that we have zero Republicans on the record shows what a problem this is mm-hmm I have Marc Morial who leads a civil rights group on these issues so I'm going to turn to him and this has been I think a very illuminating discussion I particularly preciate some of the real truth and personal things that each of you shared somebody thanks to Adam Tiffany and Michelle Neal comes back for opening arguments later in the show but Marc Morial is who joins me next he is of course the leader of the National Urban League before we turn to him I want to play a little more of what congresswoman Presley just said I encourage the American people in all of us in this room and beyond to not take the bait this is a disruptive distraction from the issues of care concern and consequence to the American people Marc Morial as mentioned is here your response and given the conversation we just had that dealt with some of the ethics and the political dynamics of this what do you want Americans at home to do with this tonight well the first thing nobody's going anywhere nobody's going anywhere in other words you can't tell people to go anywhere we are all Americans we're American citizens it is stunning because it's Charlottesville chapter two its birtherism maybe it's birtherism Chapter three it's just a continuation of a pattern this idea that the president is racist is embraced by almost a majority of the American people it is a stunning statement into here Lindsey Graham flip-flop to understand that Mitch McConnell is hiding and has nothing to say just underscores that this is a moral moment everyone needs to condemn these statements is to condemn this approach needs to condemn nationalism we cannot let nationalism white nationalism get legitimized in this country we cannot let white nationalism take hold in this country so this is once again a moment where anyone who's a responsible person or responsible leader has to condemn the statements made by Donald Trump and condemn the idea that you're going to take four members of Congress duly elected by their constituents who are American citizens and because you disagree with them you're gonna condemn them you're gonna say go home no no no you mentioned the silence and what a moment this is that's true for leaders the Republican Party it's also true for people who I mean Steve minuchin who I'm about to show you is someone who out of New York certainly wouldn't have seemed to be someone who 10 or 20 years ago would imagine himself standing by this I guess that's the part that can be so depressing is not only the trumpism has at times revealed what's out there but it's also in in some other ways too based and perhaps worsened what's out there take a look at minuchin today do you find the president speaks resist and what do you make of I think the president I don't find them racist the president just went on and clarified his comments I think he speaks for himself on that he was very clear but again we're focused on crypto currencies I don't want to make light of anything serious tonight mark but we're focused on crypto currencies it's not coming well its logo hence ducking and dodging its ducking and dodging it's evading it's avoiding Steve minuchin knows this is racist met the American people know this is racist but not only that it's unacceptable it's beyond the presidency look you could say to every European American go back African Americans were brought here the Native American popular you all go back this was our land if you want to play that kind of game but you know whether it's Steve minuchin or Lindsey Graham or Mitch McConnell what they're doing is they're shirking their moral responsibility this is bigger than who you work for this is bigger than what party you're in this is whether you are a person of great principle and I'm just earning people to stand up to this kind of statement to stand up to these actions this is where do you stand it's not whether you agree with or like or or support the four members of Congress at whom this is directed them today someone else tomorrow and it could be you the next day so we've got to stand up now I agree it's a distraction and for me what's also at stake is not statements but policies the failure of the Justice Department and the Department of Education to enforce the civil rights laws the inability of this presidency to find it in its in its appointment power to appoint a cabinet or staff that's holistically diverse it's those policies which emanate these statements suggest something else in terms of policy it goes to the ending up at a time of a time of moral crisis right and it goes to the we're dealing we're dealing with a marketer it goes to the rhetorical and cultural war that he wants to have around those policies as he runs the reelection just like he pet promised new immigration raids that some of which haven't been delivered on when he announced his reelection it's a context remark in addition other esteemed panelists I thank you for being here I appreciate your comments get out and vote register register register hey I'm already Melbourne from MSNBC you can see more of our videos right here or better yet subscribe to our youtube channel below President Obama fellow Americans and people of the world thank you we the citizens of America are now joined a great national effort to rebuild our country and restore its promise for all of our people together we will determine the course of America and the world for many many years to come we will face challenges we will confront hardships but we will get the job done every four years we gather on these steps to carry out the orderly and peaceful transfer of power and we are grateful to President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama for their gracious aid throughout this transition they have been magnificent thank you today's ceremony however has very special meaning because today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another but we are transferring power from Washington DC and giving it back to you the people for too long a small group in our nation's capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost Washington flourished but the people did not share in its wealth politicians prospered but the jobs left and the factories closed the establishment protected itself but not the citizens of our country their victories have not been your victories their triumphs have not been your triumphs and while they celebrated in our nation's capital there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land that all changes starting right here and right now because this moment is your moment it belongs to you [Applause] it belongs to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across America this is your day this is your celebration and this the United States of America is your country what truly matters is not which party controls our government but whether our government is controlled by the people January 20th 2017 will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again [Applause] The Forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer [Applause] everyone is listening to you now you came by the tens of millions to become part of a historic movement the likes of which the world has never seen before at the center of this movement is a crucial conviction that a nation exists to serve its citizens Americans want great schools for their children safe neighborhoods for their families and good jobs for themselves these are just and reasonable demands of righteous people and a righteous public but for too many of our citizens a different reality exists mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities rusted out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation an education system flush with cash but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of all knowledge and the crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential this American carnage stops right here and stops right now [Applause] we are one nation and their pain is our pain their dreams are our dreams and their success will be our success we share one heart one home and one glorious destiny the oath of office I take today is an oath of allegiance to all Americans for many decades we've enriched foreign industry at the expense of American industry subsidize the armies of other countries while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military we've defended other nation's borders while refusing to defend our own [Applause] and spent trillions and trillions of dollars overseas while America's infrastructure has fallen into disrepair and decay we've made other countries rich while the wealth strength and confidence of our country has dissipated over the horizon one by one the factory shuttered and left our shores with not even a thought about the millions and millions of American workers that were left behind the wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and then redistributed all across the world but that is the past and now we are looking only to the future [Applause] we assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city in every foreign capital and in every Hall of power from this day forward a new vision will govern our land from this day forward it's going to be only America first America first every decision on trade on taxes on immigration on Foreign Affairs will be made to benefit American workers and American families we must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products stealing our companies and destroying our jobs [Applause] protection will lead to great prosperity and strength I will fight for you with every breath in my body and I will never ever let you down [Applause] America will start winning again winning like never before we will bring back our jobs we will bring back our borders we will bring back our wealth and we will bring back our dreams [Applause] we will build new roads and highways and bridges and airports and tunnels and railways all across our wonderful nation we will get our people off of welfare and back to work rebuilding our country with American hands and American labor we will follow two simple rules by American and hire American we will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first we do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone but rather to let it shine as an example we will shine for everyone to follow we will reinforce old alliances and form new ones and unite the civilized world against radical Islamic terrorism which we will eradicate completely from the face of the earth at the bedrock of our politics will be a total allegiance to the United States of America and through our loyalty to our country we will rediscover our loyalty to each other when you open your heart to patriotism there is no room for prejudice [Applause] the Bible tells us how good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity we must speak our minds openly debate our disagreements honestly but always pursue solidarity when America is united America is totally unstoppable there should be no fear we are protected and we will always be protected we will be protected by the great men and women of our military and law enforcement and most importantly we will be protected by God [Applause] finally we must think big and dream even bigger in America we understand that a nation is only living as long as it is striving we will no longer accept politicians who are all talk and no action constantly complaining but never doing anything about it the time for empty talk is over now our lives the hour of action do not allow anyone to tell you that it cannot be done no challenge can match the heart and fight and spirit of America we will not fail our country will thrive and prosper again we stand at the birth of a Lu millenium ready to unlock the mysteries of space to free the earth from the miseries of disease and to harness the energies industries and technologies of tomorrow a new national pride will stir ourselves lift our sights and heal our divisions it's time to remember that old wisdom our soldiers will never forget that whether we are black or brown or white we all bleed the same red blood of patriots [Applause] we all enjoy the same glorious freedoms and we all salute the same great American flag and whether a child is born in the urban sprawl of Detroit or the windswept CNN The Lead with Jake Tapper 7/15/19 | President Trump Breaking News Today July 15, 2019

now can't stop won't stop president Trump continuing to say Democratic Congress women of color should go back where they came from even though three of the four he seems to be targeting her from the US and all four are American citizens the latest on yet another standard of basic decency and American values shattered also GOP m.i.a if you're looking for Republicans to condemn these hateful tweets you're not gonna find a lot of takers 2020 Democratic candidate Cory Booker will react this hour Plus shocking and upsetting murder mystery the founder of an African American History Museum found dead in the trunk of a car what the autopsy results reveal welcome to the lead eject app where we begin with the politics lead today president Trump is not backing away from his stunningly racist attack on a group of minority members of Congress instead he's trying to defend it denying it was racist and spewing even more divisiveness these are people that in my opinion hate our country all I'm saying that if they're not happy here they can leave they can leave and you know what I'm sure many people that won't miss them yesterday mr. Trump tweeted that progressive Democratic congresswoman who quote originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe unquote should quote go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came then come back and show us how it's done these places need your help they are expecting to hear from those four members of Congress soon as some Republicans now a day later are beginning to condemn the racist tweets many have stayed silent or even tried to play dumb as demonstrated by acting US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli what did you think of that tweet well I didn't see that tweet actually I can hear what you're reading did my colleague Jake Tapper renew that tweet yesterday yes he did so you have heard this tweet before and you have had 24 hours to process it so what so what that's one approach I guess another approach has been to say the president was only giving voice to frustrations with sentiments at the for congresswoman perhaps especially congresswoman Omar have expressed the idea I suppose being that congresswoman Omar has said things that people find offensive even occasionally bigoted therefore it's okay to be bigoted to her here's vice presidential chief of staff mark short I don't think that the president's intent anyway is racist I think he's trying to point out the fact that that it's in selected it's hard to find anything ill on Omar said that actually is supported by the United States of America so anti-american sentiment in this view justifies racism it of course does not in any decent or civilized world but a world in which religious and racial and nationalistic hatred is out in the open well it's certainly acceptable there in fact the president was asked today if it bothered him that white supremacists had found common cause in his go back where you came from tweets here's the president's response doesn't concern me because many people agree with me right and some of those people are white supremacists and they think a lot of us should go back where we came from me and him and him and her even if we ourselves came from the United States of America now this isn't new you can find and I did in a Kansas newspaper from the 1800's evidence of a local demagogue telling a Swedish American who had expressed concern about the then current state of affairs to go back to where he came from now the Kansas journalist who wrote this up mocked this quote debasing insult again this is in the 19th century questioning whether or not only those with heritage in Sweden by those with heritage in Germany or Ireland or Norway should go back where they came from of course they shouldn't and thank God they didn't but in Manhattan Kansas in August 1892 they knew better CNN's Katelyn Collins has more now from the White House if you're not happy in the u.s. if you're complaining all the time very simply you can leave you can leave right now President Trump says he has no regrets about his racist attacks on Democratic lawmakers who were all women of color all I'm saying that if they're not happy here they can leave they can leave instead of walking back his remarks today Trump defended telling four Democratic Congress women to go back where they came from it doesn't say leave forever it says leave if you want where they came from is the United States three of them were born here and the four earth is now a US citizen who arrived as a child and Refugee facts the president ignored today these are people that hate our country hey John they hate our country they hate it I think with a passion Trump claims he's not being racist do you think the tweets were racist but when asked about white nationalist groups that have identified with his remarks the president responded with this doesn't concern me because many people agree with me instead Trump attempted to employ a tactic he's used before accusing his opponents of what they've accused him of speaker Pelosi said make America white again let me tell you that's a very racist that's a very racist statement but Pelosi said the president was the one pushing to make America white again not her Trump who often airs his own grievances on Twitter claimed the lawmakers should leave because all they do is complain a source telling CNN it was the president's idea to address the attacks as his own cabinet members struggled to defend his remarks I don't find them racist I understand what the president's comment is I'm not concerned by the president's comment few Republican lawmakers have been willing to condemn Trump's comments and some spent the day avoiding the issue altogether I hadn't read that but I go check it out now Jake a White House official told me it was the president's idea to address his remarks while he was speaking with reporters today and now pictures captured from at that event by White House photographers showed just how pre-planned the president's remarks are you can see bullet points of what exactly it was that the president then went on to tell reporters and you can see edits made by the president in his classic use of his sharpie there on the paper all right Kaylin Collins thanks so much let's chew over all of this with my gang here a sungmin you tweeted that every Asian American you know has been told to go back where you came from Wow yeah I mean it's something that I and my friends and colleagues have heard often where it's you know you know go back where you came from I grew up in Iowa yeah that's why these comments from the president are incredibly stunning but also stunning to me for the last couple of days it's just the the lack of response from Republican lawmakers until we the public and the press started to have to kind of push them into an answer by reaching out to their offices or going after Republican lawmakers in the hallways of the Capitol there does seem to be some sort of a numbness for lack of a better description from Republicans about what the president is saying right now and I assume that we'll hear more from the lawmakers later tonight and perhaps tomorrow Mitch McConnell has indicated that he would comment on it tomorrow afternoon but it is still kind of shocking nonetheless how everything has unfolded and just for the record again three of the four are from the United States not that it matters by the way if all four were from another country you still don't do it have you ever been told absolutely I mean it's a common refrain for white supremacists to actually say go back to Africa African Americans all over the country particularly those who live in diverse contexts have been told that and I've been told that in my history and I think it's important to understand what the president is doing though not is it just you know raw meat for his face not is it just political opportunism in terms of driving a wedge in terms of the Democratic coalition but it's also reinforcing this notion that the only legitimate Americans are white Americans and what that does is two things it Stokes this notion that our diverse democracy and the gains of the civil rights era are illegitimate and and of course embolden those who want to go back to the 1950s era where everybody else was marginalized but it's also endangering approximately 40 percent of our nation's population because hate crimes have been going up dramatically in our country and when the President of the United States basically makes the claim that people of color are not legitimate Americans then it emboldened those people who want to do harm to people of color who are Americans to basically give them license to do so and we've seen that we've seen evidence of that happening Jackie Peter Baker's lead in the New York Times was quote President Trump woke up on Sunday morning gazed out at the nation he leads saw the dry King of race relations and decided to throw a match on it it was not the first time nor is it likely to be the last he has a pretty large carton of matches and a ready supply of kerosene it's a very apt way of saying what happened and the presidents is message of us against them us being you know the people he represents to the fullest that the resentment of immigrants of African Americans of people that are not white that that that's what he's talking to and he it's something that we're going to hear and we continue to hear over and over and over again particularly because the president's campaigning right now it's not so much governing as much as he's pushing agenda items and policies meant to make the base come out and not necessarily even to become law it's it is about his relationship but this is help him bill I mean do you really think I understand the idea of wedge issues that 50% of the country hates and 50% of the country loves I mean those exist in immigration is not particularly one of them actually according to polling but I can understand why going after the Pledge of Allegiance of the American flag things like that work but just being naked ly racist who does that help I would hope it hurts him I mean it's disgusting what he said really deplorable that Republican kind of members of Congress have been silent almost until this afternoon a little bit a few finally took them quite a while they didn't do what I think one would have done a fellow member of Congress being attacked in this way leave aside it's bad enough when he attacks just random other Americans usually you'd have a kind of instinct to defend them and say that's inappropriate but look it wasn't simply I think Peter Baker's leads a little I'm it's fine there's little misleading in sense it wasn't just racism it was there was a retina say there he thought I think Trump thinks he's being clever and I hope he's not but you know he and reason is Nancy Pelosi was in a fight with AOC in Doha Omar and the rest of them and they are a face of the never play are to the left of most of the Democratic Party and probably scare some swing voters if the if swing voters can be persuaded that that is the Democratic Party that's what he's doing I mean he is a racist always at least willing to very recklessly and irresponsibly play the card of racism certainly has no compunctions about that I don't know that he's an old-fashioned southern racist who wakes up in the morning heating or despising or having content for African Americans I think he is totally unembarrassed by playing that card but he thinks he's being clever politically this is now God surround us surround and expand just embrace these were people right that's what he's trying in anti-semitism are and the whole notion that religion has somehow plays into this he's really trying to actually burst apart the Democratic coalition in anticipation of 2020 that being said we've got to realize that actually he's a part of and his family has been historically racist if you look at the the example of his father and what they did with housing and in New York City there is a track record there where you actually have to believe at the core of Donald J Trump is racist and the fact his father were sued for discriminating housing in the South 1970 and the fact that he hired people in the White House who have had white supremacist sympathies who have been out there actually stoking the white supremacist base not only here in America but also in Western Europe should not be ignored there is a larger paradigm at play here a larger strategy and that is to you know basically that basically embrace you know this whole notion of the Aryan supremacy that we've seen throughout Western history but we're now seeing implement it by one of the two major political parties in the United States right here right now all right and of course we welcome a Republican to come on the show and talk about this issue we have I mean we have a Republican but a Republican officeholder we have not haven't many luck of booking any coming up next everyone's stick around reaction to the president's racist remarks from 2020 presidential candidate senator Cory Booker plus the new rule from the Trump administration making it a lot harder for people to seek asylum here in these lead a slow molasses-like trickle of criticism coming from House and Senate Republicans after President Trump told progressive Democratic Congress women all American citizens all of color to go back to their quote crime-infested home countries with corrupt governments of course their home country is the United States mr. president we to here soon from the four Democratic congresswoman at the center of this controversy CNN's Phil Mattingly is on Capitol Hill and Phil the the bigotry inherent in the expression go back where you came from it's pretty clear it's pretty ugly you might think this would be an easy thing for Republican officeholders to condemn yeah and yet Jake throughout the course of yesterday and actually through the first half of today you didn't hear much at all that started to shift after the president's press conference where he tripled or quadrupled down on his statements and you've started to see at least a slow stream of statements coming out from Republican lawmakers not a lot of Republican lawmakers right now about a dozen 215 lawmakers calling it divisive saying it was wrong saying it was the a bad approach if you will you also at least to this point however have not heard from any of the top members of House or Senate Republican leadership I just spoke to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a short while ago he said he would address it tomorrow and his weekly press conference we did hear from senator roy blunt a member of senate leadership who said quote in a statement just because the so-called squad constantly insults and attacks the president isn't a reason to adopt their unacceptable tactics now the backstory to the extent there is one right now Jake at least from what I've been told is there has been no messaging guidance sent out to rank-and-file Republican members and they are doing what we've seen repeatedly over the course of the last several years the delicate dance of trying not to do something that will upset the president but still try and weigh in if they can that doesn't always work particularly well particularly in a situation like this one lawmaker however was not waiting and did not hedge his words at all that was Republican congressman from Texas will hurt take a listen the tweets are are racist and xenophobic they're also inaccurate its behavior that's unbecoming of a President of the United States and the leader of the free world we take very few following that lead and I will tell you I've had several Republican aides and a few Republican lawmakers say they're willing to talk on background about their true feelings about this but the reality is on something like this if you're not willing to put your name on it to be frank there's no reason for us to broadcast it in my view Jake profiles and courage on Capitol Hill Phil Mattingly thanks so much joining me now on the phone is New Jersey Democratic senator and 2020 presidential candidate cory booker senator Booker thanks so much for joining us I know you're running around Iowa it's tough to get you on the phone so I appreciate it the president denied his attack was racist take a listen to what he had to say and all I'm saying that if they're not happy here they can leave they can leave and you know what I'm I'm sure there'll be many people that won't miss them what's your reaction to that my reaction is that this is clearly bigoted vile dangerous this is a president is trafficking in the same kind of toxic tropes that white supremacist views on their platforms what they prefer to try to that's a divided country could attack American I never imagined that I would hear language like this coming from a president of the United States endangering frankly if you look at the kind of white supremacist violent attack that we've seen in this country he is literally Fanning the flames of racial violence and and to me this is outrageous and unacceptable and it is driving the heart and divisions in our country the president should be a uniter should bring our country together she reminded salon times and divideth are not as strong as the ties that bind us and dear God he is ripping at the fabric of our country for his own political gain and proffer and of racism that we should hope there was the last time we ever hear that kind of language when United a president well that's interesting that you mentioned that he's doing it for his own political gain because the president continued his attacks today on Twitter he wrote quote if Democrats want to unite around the foul language and racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular and unrepresentative Congress women it will be interesting to see how it plays out unquote do you think that the president going after these women in such a naked ly racist way might be effective for the president in rallying his base and and getting reelected no no I have faith in this nation I think who we are I just believe that this is not only going to be a strategy at least with political demise but it's gonna rise up the conscience of this country to fight him and these sentiments in our country this is a time where Americans it turns their stomach I know this I know this from from Republicans file file trafficking in hatred and bigotry and divisiveness and it will will not work we've had a before in our country we see them from the know-nothing party against Irish and Italians we've seen it from national radio hosts like Father Conklin and their anti-semitic screens we've seen this brand of demagoguery and hatred before and they have always been taken down not by any individual party but by the good conscience of Americans that rose up and said we are better than this this is not who we are we are a nation that was called to put indivisible more indivisible into a one nation that is under God well let me ask you put aside for a second if you can the president's racist attacked on these congresswoman and his record on these issues Democrats have found issues with things that congresswoman Omar and congresswoman Talib have said some of your supporters have said that that they've made bigoted comments certainly anti-semitic what do you say to a voter who says hey you know what senator Booker I am so offended but what by what President Trump said but I've also been offended by things I've heard from Democrats like Omar and Talib I'm offended by things I've heard from Farrakhan who a lot of Democrats are friendly with what do you have to say about that I actually don't agree with what you said and and what I disagree with what what Omar said I found it problematic and I still remember her actually reflecting upon it and apologizing so this business to even create an equivalency between what the President of the United States is saying that the vileness that that of what she speaks the unrelenting attack they're not just attacks on those four women what he said go back to where you came from it is a tax on all who are here of ethnic descent all not just black folks or Latino folks I'm talking about immigrants Irish people whose family came through Ellis Island what the hell is he talking about this is file this is racist this is not you can't make it an equivalency in any way go to two or what they have said and he's doing it from the white house he's doing it from the highest office in the land what I know this country you're in or is it it's president should be someone that should not get into the gutter with white supremacist using their language using their tactics they should be rising up to call us to come together at a time we still have difficult racial issues at a time that you see a lot of problems that need to be healed and address he's failing miserably senator Cory Booker thank you so much for tying both care plan and attack their plans in the process Biden attaching himself further to his former boss with a proposal to expand Obamacare today and add a public option that Americans could buy into cnn's Arlette science now takes a closer look at what Biden's plan might mean for your health care and how it's drawing a dividing line in the 2020 race Joe Biden ramping up the 2020 battle over health care unveiling his own proposal and taking on Medicare for all I understand the appeal of medicare-for-all but folks supporting it should be clear that it means getting rid of Obamacare at the center of his plan building on the Obama administration's signature health care initiative the Affordable Care Act Biden's proposal creates a public option allowing people to buy into a Medicare like program the plan also provides massive subsidies to make coverage through Obamacare cheaper for everyone regardless of income the ten-year price tag for this plan comes in at 750 billion dollars as many Democratic voters cite health care as a top issue Biden has escalated his pushback on some of his rivals backing a single-payer system we should not be starting from scratch we should be building from what we have the former vice president even highlighting one area where he differed from Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders at the recent debates the question was asked whether we support eliminating private health insurance some said yes I said absolutely not a recent CNN poll found while eighty-five percent of Democrats favored a national health insurance plan only 30 percent back scrapping and private insurance while Biden brands himself as the protector of Obamacare Sanders is defending his medicare-for-all plan tweeting I appreciate that President Obama has said recently that Medicare for all is a good idea referencing this comment from September of last year Democrats aren't just running on good old ideas like a higher minimum wage they're running on good new ideas like Medicare for all and we'll be hearing a lot more about health care soon Kamala Harris has teased a policy proposal and Bernie Sanders on Wednesday will be making his case for Medicare for all these candidates drawing their battle lines ahead of the next debate just over two weeks away Jacob Arlette Science thanks so much let's chew over all this my you're chair of the Democratic Party in Maryland you have not endorsed any any candidate what do you think of the Joe Biden approach to this he's basically saying no I don't want Medicare for all polls say 30% of Democrats might might actually support scrapping a private insurance but no but 70% don't so this is about the politics of incrementalism versus you know going wholeheartedly at the issue and what they're arguing about is whether or not to embrace the social insurance system I'm not concerned by the president's comment few Republican lawmakers have been willing to condemn Trump's comments and some spent the day avoiding the issue altogether I hadn't read that but I'll go check it out now Jake a White House official told me it was the president's idea to address his remarks while he was speaking with reporters today and now pictures captured from at that event by White House photographers showed just how pre-planned the president's remarks are you can see bullet points of what exactly it was that the president then went on to tell reporters and you can see edits made by the president in his classic use of his sharpie there on the paper all right Kaylin Collins thanks so much let's chew over all of this with my gang here a sungmin you tweeted that every Asian American you know has been told to go back where you came from Wow yeah I mean it's something that I and my friends and colleagues have heard often where it's you know you know go Democrats Vow To Block President Donald Trump's SCOTUS Pick | Rachel Maddow | MSNBC

summer of 1968 presidential election was looming in the fall and because when it rains it pours in politics that summer summer of 68 the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court decided that he would like to retire Chief Justice Earl Warren told President Johnson that he wanted to retire now LBJ was at the end of his term right he was deeply unpopular at the time he decided not to run for re-election and LBJ devised a plan for what he was gonna do about that chief justice seat he decided that he would elevate to the chief justice position a Justice who was already on the Supreme Court justice who'd already been on the court for three years his friend Abe Fortas and Republicans were already not hot on Abe Fortas because of his liberal views because of his ties to President Johnson but their support their potential support for a Portis being Chief Justice that cratered when it was revealed that justice Fortas had accepted a bunch of speaking fees from private donors for a series of college lectures which he should not have done and so they filibustered him they blocked his nomination for four days on October 1st 1968 a month before the election there was an attempt to beat that filibuster and the attempt dramatically failed and the Abe Fortas nomination to be chief justice that whole thing fell apart Fortas lost the vote was on cloture on stopping the filibuster on forcing the members to stop talking to sit down and to decide whether they confirmed Fortas or not they took a vote on ending the filibuster and the Senate clerk announced the result 45 to 43 that was 14 votes short of two-thirds of the Senators present the Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield and said the appointment would be laid aside temporarily and the Senate would go to other business that was October of 1968 that was so long ago we didn't have c-span we had Senate sketch artists like it was a cameras banned from the courtroom situation October 1968 that is the last and only time a Supreme Court nominee was successfully filibustered in modern times the last time an opposition party tried to mount a filibuster was in 2006 the Sam Alito nomination twenty four Democrats led by John Kerry and Ted Kennedy supported by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in O six they attempted to filibuster Alito's nomination to the court but 20 Democratic senators would not go along and that effort failed so again the last time they or it's able to pull this off was 68 he's it gonna happen again are they going to be able to pull it off prior to tonight's announcement about who the nominee would be for the Supreme Court see before we knew it was going to be Neil Gorsuch the Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell had a suggestion for Democrats don't filibuster what I would expect from our Democratic friends is the nominee can be handled similarly to President Clinton's two nominees in his first term and President Obama's two nominees in his first term President Obama's two nominees in his first term I'd like to get really specific because they don't want to talk about the third nomination that President Obama made no mention of Merrick Garland's President Obama's third nominee who faced this unprecedented blockade by Republican senators who refused since last March to even hold the hearing on his nomination despite the fact that Merrick garland was a completely non controversial nomination well tonight the new Republican president has announced that appeals court judge Neil Gorsuch is his choice for that Supreme Court seat that Merrick garland was supposed to be the nominee for after Neil Gorsuch was announced as the nominee we got this statement from the Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer quote the Senate must insist upon 60 votes for any Supreme Court nominee a bar that was met by each of President Obama's nominees the burden is on Judge Gorsuch to prove himself to be within the legal mainstream and in this new era willing to vigorously defend the Constitution from abuses of the executive branch the headline there may be not surprising but the Democratic Senate leader affirming that they're going to insist on a 60-vote threshold Republicans do not have 60 votes in the Senate what this means is that Democrats are going to filibuster Senate Democrats were already under intense pressure from Democratic voters who have been loudly upset with Democrats casting votes for Trump cabinet nominees that pressure will intensify on Democrats now that we've got a Supreme Court nomination as well even before tonight even before we got the name tonight one Democratic senator had been standing up loudly and overtly saying that he would filibuster the pic regardless of who it was because he said Republicans effectively stole this Supreme Court seat from President Obama a senator who has been making that case all along is Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley joining us now is Senator Merkley senator thank you very much for being up late and being here with us on nominee nomination I really appreciate your welcome Rachel I wouldn't miss it well does the announcement of Judge Gorsuch his name is remarks tonight the president's introduction of hammering tonight does that change your mind at all about your desire to filibuster this nomination no not at all I mean the point I was making was we must not forget this this is not a normal consideration this is a seat that was stolen from the former President Obama that's never been done in US history before to let this become normal just invites a complete partisan polarization of the court From Here to Eternity at what point does a majority say in the future we will not let someone make a nomination two years into their four years or three years into four years or their entire four years so I made it clear that I was going to insist on a 60 vote standard and that I would vote against closing debate so existing on 60 votes is the way you you start what we refer to as a filibuster and then the question is there going to be enough votes to shut it down and of course my hope is is that there won't be how many how many senators do you need to join with you in order to make it so that Judge Gorsuch has to clear 60 votes in order to get confirmed how many people do you need you have to have 41 senators vote against closing debate there are 48 Democratic Senatorial senators said another 48 you need 41 oh yes so we've got 48 senators who are either Democrats are who are caucusing with the Democrats do you have any sense of your colleagues views toward this and whether or not you think you'll clear that 41 vote number well I suspect we're going to hear a lot of statements from colleagues but the colleagues who are waiting to see if possibly the president would nominate someone like Merrick garland are going to be sorely disappointed tonight this is a nick from the extreme right someone who has said corporations art people made that case someone who has proceeded to be against class-action suits which are the only opportunity for fairness for a lot of citizens I mean you go by case by case by case this is about the powerful and the privileged and oppressing the rights of the people I think I think there's going to be an enormous number of senators who decide that this person is not suitable because they will not honor our We the People vision of government embedded in our Constitution Senator Merkley I'm sort of been reading the tea leaves on this a little bit trying to get a sense of where the Democrats in the Senate are on this and whether or not this is a time when we might expect a democratic effort that would be a big deal that would be a heavy lift in political terms not just because of the qualifications of this nominee but because it would set a new standard for what it means to get a Supreme Court justice I look at the size of those protests in the streets I look at the mood of the Democratic base right now I look at the reaction of Democratic voters and protesters to what the new administration is doing who they've nominated to the cabinet and I see a lot of momentum I see a lot of energy how do you know whether or not it's going to translate into into this working are you worried that if you try and fail Democrats will be showing weakness here well I I never worried about trying and failing you have to fight the battles you believe in and that's what enables you to win is to undertake that battle I can tell you that this weekend I had two town halls on Saturday the first had 600 folks crowded into a gym that could only fit about 400 it was almost scary and I thought I'm never going to see another Town Hall like this I went to my second town hall and 3700 citizens showed up to weigh in about how angry they are how frustrated they are about how America has gone way off track under just the at that point ten days of this presidential leadership by Trump Jeff Merkley of Oregon about to be involved in one of the political fights of your life sir thank you for helping us understand tonight I appreciate being so welcome alright this is gonna be very interesting I mean what Jeff Merkley is talking about here what Chuck Schumer now says is going to be the Democratic strategy here is to get 41 Democrats to line up with this filibuster they've got 48 democratic or caucusing with the Democratic caucus senators in the Senate if they can get 41 of the 48 to side with this strategy they can at least theoretically they can block this nomination from the minority it would be a radical move it would change the way that Supreme Court nominees are approved in this country sort of been changing on its own anyway but this is gonna be a fascinating thing to watch and it'll be fascinating to see if they'll those protesters out in the street all those people showing up at Senate offices and town hall meetings and all these things all over the country whether they're gonna backstop their democratic senators on this strategy this is gonna be a hell of a fight we'll be right back hey there I'm Chris Hayes from MSNBC thanks for watching MSNBC on YouTube if you want to keep up to date Watch Live: July 4th In Washington, Trump’s ‘Salute To America’ Military Event | NBC News

THAT'S >>> YOU'RE LOOKING AT LIVE PICS OF THE NATIONAL MALL WHERE PRESIDENT TRUMP IS ABOUT TO START SPEAKING. PART OF THE CONTROVERSIAL FOURTH OF JULY EVENT THAT WE HAVE TALKING ABOUT FOR DAYS IS CALLED SALUTE TO AMERICA. IT'S GOING TO INVOLVE FIREWORKS, A FLYOVER, MILITARY TANKS, ALL SORTS OF THINGS. THE WEATHER IS NOT PARTICULARITY GREAT. IT'S BEEN RAINING ON AND OFF THROUGHOUT THE DAY IN D.C. THIS HAS BEEN A HIGHLY CRITICIZED AND CONTROVERSIAL EVENT. WE KNOW IT'S GOING TO COST AT LEAST $2.5 MILLION IF NOT MORE. A LOT OF PEOPLE CONCERNED THAT MONEY WAS COMING FROM TAXPAYER DOLLARS TO THE NATIONAL PARK WHICH ARE SUPPOSED TO GO TO HELP IMPROVE THE NATIONAL PARK. A LOT OF PEOPLE IN D.C. ALSO WORRIED ABOUT THE IMPACTS THE TANKS AND MILITARY EQUIPMENT MIGHT HAVE ON THE ROAD THERE. THERE'S VICE PRESIDENT MIKE PENCE. THERE WAS SOME CONCERN THAT WEATHER MIGHT DETER THE CROWDS. AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE ON THE NATIONAL MALL. THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES WERE SAYING THEY FELT LIKE TODAY WAS ABOUT COMMUNITY, THAT THEY WERE NOT THRILLED ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING ON IN WASHINGTON, D.C. THIS IS A FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION UNLIKE ANY OTHER. IT'S UNCOMMON FOR THE PRESIDENT TO BE ON THE NATIONAL MALL ON THE FOURTH OF JULY. THAT RAISED A LOT OF SECURITY CONCERNS ABOUT WHAT THAT WOULD COST AND WHAT KIND OF SECURITY RISK IT WOULD POSE. IT LOOKS LIKE THEY HAVE MANAGED TO PULL IT OFF THIS EVENING. WE WILL SEE IF THIS IS THE GREAT SHOW THE PRESIDENT HAS BEEN PROMISING, INSPIRED BY THAT BASTILLE DAY EVENT HE SAW IN PARIS WHEN HE WAS WITH EMANUEL MACRON. HE LIKED THAT EUROPEAN UNION STYLE MILITARY PARADE AND SO DECIDED TO BRING ONE HERE RIGHT TO THE NATIONAL MALL. THE BAND SOUNDS LIKE THEY ARE KICKING UP A LITTLE BIT AND THE FLAGS ARE COMING IN SO IT APPEARS THE PRESIDENT MIGHT BE ABOUT TO MAKE HIS WAY TO THE PODIUM WHERE HE IS GOING TO ADDRESS THE NATION AS PART OF THIS EVENING'S CELEBRATION. YOU CAN SEE THEM RAMPING UP HERE. MONICA IS THERE IN D.C. WHERE THINGS JUST GOT FINISHED. MONICA, HOW ARE YOU DOING OVER THERE? WE CAN SEE, IT IS A PRETTY RAINY EVENING BUT INCREDIBLE NONETHELESS. >> HEY, GUYS, THAT'S RIGHT. THE RAIN IS STILL FALLING. PRESIDENT TRUMP CONCLUDING HIS REMARKS ON STAGE. THERE WAS A LOT OF CONCERN ABOUT WHETHER THE WEATHER WOULD HOLD UP AND WHETHER IT WOULD GO OFF WITHOUT A HITCH AND INDEED IT DID STARTING WITH AIR FORCE ONE WHICH ACTUALLY FLEW A LOT LOWER THAN YOU WOULD NORMALLY SEE. THE PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY HAVE JUST LEFT THE STAGE WHERE THEY'LL BE HEADING BACK TO THE WHITE HOUSE. AGAIN, A LITTLE RAIN DIDN'T SEEM TO BOTHER THE PRESIDENT. HE HAD TO STAND BEHIND SOME BULLET PROOF GLASS WHICH IS CUSTOMARY AT EVENTS LIKE THIS. ESPECIALLY OUT IN THE PUBLIC. SO THE SHOT THAT MOST PEOPLE SAW AT HOME HAD A LOT OF WATER ON IT AND SPOKE TO THE THUNDERSTORMS OF THE AREA. BUT THE EVENT ITSELF WENT AS EXPECTED. THE WHITE HOUSE RELEASED SOME EXCERPTS AHEAD OF TIME AND THIS IS VERY MUCH STUCK TO THE TELEPROMPTER. IT WAS A BIG QUESTION MARK GOING INTO TONIGHT. THE PRESIDENT'S CRITICS SAY THAT THE ENTIRE EVENT WAS VERY POLITICAL. BY THE DESIGN OF THIS. ARMORED TENTS AND VEHICLES ALONG THE NATIONAL MALL. IN REALITY, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE TURNED OUT. THE PRESIDENT DID STICK TO THE SCRIPT SO THAT WAS A SURPRISE HERE. IN A FEW HOURS, THE FIREWORKS ARE SCHEDULED TO GET UNDERWAY. IT MAY NOT BE AS SPECTACULAR BUT I CAN TELL YOU THE MILITARY FLYOVER FROM THE NATIONAL MALL WAS A SIGHT TO SEE AND THE PRESIDENT SEEMED VERY PLEASED. >> TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE VIBE THERE. YOU'RE SEEING THE PRESIDENT AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND HIM. COULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CROWDS THAT YOU SAW? DID YOU SEE THE PEOPLE PROTESTING? WAS THERE ANYONE UNHAPPY WITH IT? WHAT WAS THE VIBE PARTICULARLY AS THE PLANES WERE GOING OVER. A LOT OF THE PEOPLE THAT I TALKED ON THERE EARLIER TODAY WERE TRUMP SUPPORTERS. IT HAD A VIBE ARE W THE CAMPAIGN RALLY AND PEOPLE SAID, THE PRESIDENT ASKED US TO BE HERE. WE BELIEVE IN HIS MESSAGE TO SUPPORT THE MILITARY AND WE WANT TO SEE WHAT HE HAS TO SAY. AND AS THE DAY PROGRESSED, IT WAS A SIMILAR MESSAGE. THEY SAID I HOME HE DOESN'T GET POLITICAL AND I HOPE HE DOES STICK TO TALKING ABOUT THE FOURTH OF JULY AND WHAT IT MEANS, IN TERMS OF PATRIOTIC TERMS. SOME PEOPLE GOT TICKETS FROM THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE AND THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN AND THERE WAS A LITTLE CONTROVERSY. THEY HAD ACCESS TO A SPECIAL SECTION. THE TICKETS WERE FREE AND THAT HAPPENS WITH WHITE HOUSE EVENTS WHEN YOU THINK OF CHRISTMAS EVENTS OR FALL COLORS. THOSE FOLKS CERTAINLY HAD THE BEST VIEW OF THE PRESIDENT AND EVERYTHING AT THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL. THOUSANDS OF OTHERS BEHIND NEAR THE REFLECTING POOL, THEY WATCHED EVERYTHING ON A MONITOR AND WE'LL SEE WHETHER THEY ENJOYED THAT OR WHETHER IT WAS A MIXED REVIEW EXPERIENCE SINCE IT WAS RAINING SO HARD. BUT AS WE FLASH BACKWARD, THE PRESIDENT SO FIXATED ON CROWD SIZE, WE'LL SEE WHAT HE MAKES OF THE EVENT ALL DAY. HE DID TALK ABOUT THE RAIN ALL DAY AND HOPE PEOPLE WOULD COME DESPITE THE WEATHER AND IT SEEMS THAT WAS THE CASE. WE'LL SEE WHAT THEY ACTUALLY THOUGHT ABOUT HIS REMARKS AND THE EVENT ONCE WE FINISH HERE. >> THANKS SO MUCH. IT DID LOOK LIKE THERE WERE BIG CROWDS THERE AND THAT THE RAIN DID NOT DETER THEM. THANK YOU FOR STICKING WITH US THROUGHOUT THE RAIN.
